  • Field Trips must be booked 20 days in advance by sumbitting a School Registration Form

Education Workshops

NEW!LEGO® Education Simple Machines (S.T.E.M)

Suggested for grades 4 - 6

Students will be able to build LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors; program their models; and explore a series of cross-curricular, theme-based activities while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as language, literacy, and social studies. They will also build and explore machines and mechanisms, investigate motorized machines, calibrate and capture wind, and study gearing mechanisms while participating in this workshop.  Students will work in pairs of 2. 

LEGO® Race Car

Suggested for grades 5 - 6

The Race Car Workshop is a fun, hands-on way to get students excited about mathematics and introduce them to elementary physics. Students build LEGO® race cars, race them down our track, collect data and use arithmetic to calculate their car’s performance. Students also learn about the forces that affect their cars and use this information to create lean racing machines.  

LEGO® Chicago Skyline 

Suggested for grades 3 - 4

The Chicago Skyline Workshop is a 2-part experience including an interactive guided tour through MINILAND Chicago. Students will learn how the history of Chicago shaped its world-famous skyline. Afterward, students are challenged to think critically about designing a new building for MINILAND in a hands-on classroom setting. 

LEGO® Artist 

Suggested for grades 3 - 4

The Artist workshop is a class that introduces participants to the artistic possibilities of LEGO® bricks. Using sculpture examples around LEGOLAND Discovery Center as a starting point, students will make their own unique, original LEGO sculptures and will use mathematics to figure out how to create a large scale model of their original sculpture. 

DUPLO® Bridge 

Suggested for grade 2

During this workshop, students participate in exciting building challenges intended to introduce learners to the creation of large scale structures with DUPLO® bricks. Students will be encouraged to work as a team and communicate with their fellow classmates to reach a common goal while testing their architectural design to see if their team’s bridge can withstand the weight of additional objects. 

DUPLO® Tall Towers 

Suggested for grade 1

The Tall Towers Workshop is intended to introduce young learners to the world of architecture. Students will participate in DUPLO building challenges intended to teach them the importance of teamwork and communication. Tall Towers provides a classroom setting where participants learn of early elementary science and mathematics. Our instructor will also cover construction principals, natural and man-made structures in their world, and the effects of natural disasters on tall buildings. 

DUPLO® Tall Towers Junior 

Suggested for grade pre-k - kindergarten

Tall Towers Jr. is a hands-on workshop that helps participants learn how to follow directions, recognize shapes and patters, and develop fine motor skills. Participants build LEGO® towers of various shapes, colors, and patterns. A fun, hands-on way to introduce young learners to classroom instruction. Subjects covered: Color and Pattern Recognition and Fine Motor Skills Coordination

DUPLO® Story Telling 

Suggested for grade pre-k 

In the Story Telling workshop students will read with an instructor a DUPLO Story Telling book. During the workshop children will build and discuss different aspects of the story with their class, using DUPLO as their medium. A fun, hands-on way to introduce young learners to class room instruction. Subjects Covered: Language Arts and Listening Skills

*Workshops are 30 minutes long and can accomodate up to 25 students. Simple Machines workshop is 45 minutes long and can accomodate up to 24 students. Workshops are only available to elementary schools and learning centers, both private and public, grades pre-k - 6th and are not offered on weekends, holidays and school days off.

FAQs

What kind of opportunities does LEGOLAND Discovery Center offer for school groups?

LEGOLAND Discovery Center offers a educational workshops for all qualified schools and preschool. Each workshop lasts 30 minutes and can accommodate up to 25 students at a time.

Will LEGOLAND Discovery Center come to my school to teach a program?

How do I plan my field trip?

We will provide you with a Preparation Guide to assure you are ready for your visit.

 

What is the process for scheduling a field trip?

Please request a reservation by submitting a School Registration Form. A representative from our offices will contact you to confirm your requested date.

 

How many chaparones are required for school groups?

We recommend 1 chaperone for every 5 paying students.

What happens after I register?

The group sales office at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago will try to schedule your trip and workshop for the first chosen date. If that date is not available, they will move to your second choice. You will receive a confirmation via email informing you of your date, arrival time and workshop or lunch times.

When do I need to pay?

A 50% deposit is required 14 days before your field trip. Final payment is due on the day of the field trip. If you wish to pay for the whole trip in advance you may. We accept credit cards and corporate checks. (No personal checks or cash)

How long should I plan to be at the Center for my field trip?

Schools have up to 3 hours in the center. Time limits may change during peak periods.

Where should we go when we arrive at LEGOLAND Discovery Center?

Buses can pull up to the front doors. We ask that only the group leader come inside to give a final head count and final payment to LDC staff. Once this is taken care of children can enter the center.

Where should buses park while they wait?

Buses can park in the east end of the parking lot or by Dicks Sporting Goods store. Parking is free.

What are the lunch options?

You may order meal deals for you group up to 7 days in advance through the Group Sales office. Meal Deals are $5 each and include cheese pizza, chips and a capri sun. Outside food is not allowed inside the Center. Bagged lunches must be eaten outside or on your bus. A la cart food items may be purchased from the cafe anytime during your visit. Food options include sandwiches, salads, chips, cookies, candy, soda, juice, water, fruit and gronola bars. *food items subject to change and availability.
