Entry by Dana V. for LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester's Teacher Advisory Board.
Hi. My name is Dana V., also known as Ms. V to my 20 kindergarten students. I teach in one of NJ's priority schools in a high poverty area of NJ. My children love to learn and I love to expose them to many new and exciting things. We have taken a trip pumpkin picking and also one to the Newark Museum this year. Because my school is failing and monitored by the state it is important that I make every minute an instructional one. This is where LEGO bricks come in. When I started working in my school last year my classroom was filled with bins of LEGO bricks so I decided to put my high frequency sight words on them. I use them as a game where my children get to pick a LEGO brick, read the word and if they read it correctly they get to keep it to start building their tower. The more words they read the more LEGO bricks they get to build with. They love these LEGO bricks programmed with words and it is one of their favorite center games.
