Veronica Watson of Mount Vernon, NY was named the first-ever female Master Model Builder at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester! A 2014 Magna Cum Laude graduate, from New York University, Veronica will be in charge of designing and building new models for the attraction and managing the Master Builder Academy!
We sat down with Veronica to gain insight on her love for LEGO® and how she feels about her exciting new position as the Master Model Builder!
: When did you start building with LEGO® Bricks?
: I started building with LEGO® bricks when I was about 6 years old. All through my childhood I can remember spending hours and hours building things with my brothers. It has always been something I love.
: Do you have a favorite LEGO® set?
: Yes, I actually remember the first ever LEGO® set I had as a kid was a submarine set. It was called the Stingray Explorer Submarine 6442 and it came out in 1997. I remember it had an awesome yellow submarine with claws, scuba diving mini figures, a sting ray, an underwater camera and an underwater rock formation. At the time, I thought it was the COOLEST thing ever.
: Why did you want to be the Master Model Builder?
: I have been teaching Model Building workshops at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester for a number of months now. It has been such a great experience, I love teaching the kids what I know about LEGO bricks and I love even more when they impress me with their own awesome creations. I just graduated from NYU with a degree in Urban Design and Architecture and a minor in Studio Art. As Master Model Builder, I look forward to integrating my own skills and interests into both the guests' experience in the classroom and into the awesome models we plan to display in the center. What could be a more awesome job than playing with kids and building with LEGO® bricks all day?
: What is your favorite LEGO® Color?
: That might be a tie between medium lavender (that comes in a lot of the Friends sets) and perhaps sand green (which is the green that was used in all the Harry Potter sets).
: What is your favorite LEGO® element?
: I'd like to stick with the classic and go with the normal 2x2 and 2x4 bricks. It is always exciting to see how far you can go with basic brick and the cool forms you can suggest with it.
: What is the best model you’ve ever built and what’s the longest amount of time you've spent on building a model?
: A number of years ago my little brother and I set out to build the most complete Hogwarts Harry Potter castle we could. It took up a whole table, included, all the grounds and all of the details we could think of. We both thought it was pretty awesome!
: What is your top LEGO® building tip?
: Everyone has their own way of building and their own style. Personally, I like to build relatively fast, changing and developing the model as I go along. Some builders might prefer to plan the whole model out first which is also a great thing to do. However, I enjoy how the LEGO® elements surprise me as I build and spark new ideas for the model. If you are stuck on a model that seems really difficult, try to think of the simplest way you can suggest the item you are recreating. It can be remarkable how a piece you have used a hundred times can become something totally different if you look at it in another way.
: What is the best thing about being LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester's Master Model Builder?
: The best thing is not only that I have a job where I get to be creative and build with LEGO bricks all day, but that I get to play with kids and be inspired by their amazing creations!
